It’s been a long battle for the Brown family, stars of the TLC reality show, “Sister Wives.” According to the Houston Press on December 19, it is a battle that has finally come to an end. The Brown family challenged a Utah state criminal statute which makes polygamy a crime. The Brown family won.
The Utah statute states “A person is guilty of bigamy when, knowing he has a husband or wife or knowing the other person has a husband or wife, the person purports to marry another person or cohabits with another person.”
Anyone who has watched “Sister Wives” would believe than Kody Brown is guilty of polygamy under Utah state law because he has admitted to millions of viewers that he has 4 wives and one of those weddings was televised.
According to the Houston Press, it is however important to note that “decision does NOT establish the constitutional right to plural marriage, it simply struck down a poorly written state criminal statue.”
The State of Utah will likely try to appeal the verdict. For now the Brown family won’t be criminal prosecuted.
