Polls: Obama leading in Wisconsin, Iowa and Ohio

New polls released today by Public Policy Polling (PPP), show President Barack Obama leading Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in three key battleground states. The new polls show the President leading in Wisconsin, Iowa and Ohio.

Ohio:

  • President Obama: 50 percent
  • Mitt Romney: 45 percent

Key findings in the Ohio survey show:

Obama’s approval rating is at the key 50 percent mark, with 47 percent of voters disapproving of him. Romney’s under water on his favorability, with 46 percent of voters rating him positively while 48 percent have a negative opinion.

Obama has a strong advantage over Romney on several key issues, such as who voters trust more to stand up for the middle class (Obama 53 percent, Romney 44 percent) and who they trust more to protect Medicare (Obama 51 percent, Romney 45 percent). Independents have more faith in Obama by 53 percent to Romney’s 40 percent and Obama 47 percent to Romney’s 41 percent margins respectively on those issues, and that’s helped him to tie Romney with independents overall after trailing with them on recent PPP polls.

Wisconsin:

  • President Obama: 51 percent
  • Mitt Romney 46 percent

Iowa:

  • President Obama: 50 percent
  • Mitt Romney: 45 percent

Key findings in the Wisconsin and Iowa survey show:

A majority of voters in each state has a favorable opinion of President Obama, 50/46 percent in Iowa and 52/46 percent in Wisconsin. Meanwhile Romney draws negative reviews in each at 46/51 percent in Iowa and 47/49 percent in Wisconsin.

Obama has a wide advantage over Romney on two key issues in each state. Voters trust him more than Romney to stand up for the middle class by a 52/45 percent margin in Iowa and a 52/46 percent in Wisconsin. And they trust him more to protect Medicare as well, 50/43 percent in Iowa and 52/44 percent in Wisconsin.
