Haha it was a good joke. He could have said worse. Just a joke! And Bush was known for saying dumb things and being clumsy.

  • Jasper 1 year ago

Coming from someone SMART enough to marry Heather Mills (without a prenup!), make "Give My Regards To Broadstreet", and get busted in several countries for pot (once ruining his own band's tour), and make Linda McCartney his back-up singer, and not purchase the rights to his own songs - you can't take him to serious. PS And I didn't even mention Press To Play!

  • Donna 1 year ago

Perhaps American who are complaining about Paul's comment have forgotten about the First Amendment. Paul was only expressing his opinion.

  • Jasper 1 year ago

I don't think anyone is questioning his right to say it - I think they are questioning whether it was appropriate. The rest of the world may love the current pres, but remember about half of the voters don't love him. That doesn't meant they hate him. My guess on the poll results = if you're a liberal you'll like what Paul said - if you're a conservative you won't like it. But regardless, our country is split about half and half. Therefore, what ever your political beliefs, about half the country would disagree with you. Why take the chance of offending so many?

  • Arlee 1 year ago

I am sick to death of these "he should have signed a prenup" comments. FOR THE LAST TIME: Prenuptial agreements have no legal status in Britain. You can both sign one, to show how you'd like things resolved should the marriage fail, but the courts are completely free to IGNORE the prenup and they do. So there was no freaking point in signing a prenup for a UK wedding.

It was a joke. Repubs have been telling countless harsh jokes about Obama and his family with no concern or respect "for the office." What a bunch of hypocrites to turn Paul's mild joke into a cause. But not at all surprising given the usual level of rightwing political discourse.

  • emixdub 1 year ago

Brillant Lennonish comment there. Love it. Go Paulie !

    Where's the "LOVED IT!" choice?

  • Jasper 1 year ago

I retract my (without a prenup) remark. But don't retract the parts about marrying Heather Mills, making "Give My Regards To Broadstreet", and getting busted in several countries for pot (once ruining his own band's tour), and making Linda McCartney his back-up singer, and not purchasing the rights to his own songs. Again, I will not mention "Press To Play".

  • Claire 1 year ago

People have the right to like or not to like his remark but they can't bash Paul for speaking his mind. Hello country of free speech. Anyway the Reps have made horrible comments about the Obama (including their daughters) which sometimes are dangerously close to racism, they have not right to be scandalized about Paul's mild (and very much accurate)remark. Paul actually had the courage to speak out, so I actually admire him for that.

  • Jasper 1 year ago

Actually with Freedom of speech there IS the right to bash. We saw it done from Day 1 on January 20, 2001. I state again, it's legal for me to call the president a moron - but is it appropriate in the White House (a house that belongs to the American People - Dems AND Reps and all others). I want to hear (not just read) where any Rep has insulted the president's daughters. I don't deny it - but haven't heard it. Only heard Dems say they have. I'm sure it woudl be all over the internet - the actual recording, not just the claims.

  • George 1 year ago

Paul's a moron. When they said he was the cute Beatle they obviously meant cute looking. When they he was the dead Beatle they obviously meant brain dead. His comment was rude, classless, and ignorant.

"Talk, More Talk, Oh I Love To Hear The Gentle Sound Of Conversation Screamed Around, A Room Where I Can Be And Walk With You" ...words from a song on Press To Play. I love that album. It's crass and in your face.

  • Claire 1 year ago

One think I don't get: It may or may not have been appropriate, ok we can debate how that, but isn't there bigger problem today like the financial crisis, several wars around the world, the oil issue and thousand others which are way more important than one little joke, appropriate or not? The most important in this is that McCartney did NOT mean to insult the Americans here, people should stop being so dramatic. Republicans AND Democrates should really concenrate on other issues than this one, don't you think ?

Hold on a second. What kind of a poll question is that? Three choices: (1) it didn't bother me, (2), I didn't like it, (3) undecided.

What about a fourth response, like, "I LOVED IT!" Where's THAT choice?

  • cj 1 year ago

The award should have went to an American composer - that is what it was meant for. I guess Obama couldn't think of Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Springsteen, Scott Joplin, Dolly Parton, Adre Previn, James Taylor, Eubie Blake, Duke Ellington, Quincy jones, Thelonius Monk, Holland - Dozier - Holland, Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Carole King, there are so many. Why not an American? The award has no creditbility.

  • JD 1 year ago

Paul McCartney can also take some responsibility for the drug culture in America, resulting in teenagers and young adults, getting hooked on drugs, and / or even dying after experimenting with drugs the Beatles promoted, he is an awesome songwriter, no doubt about that but we have some of the best songwriters right here in the USA - it should not have gone to a Brit. Add that to the growing list of mistakes by the POTUS.

  • debjorgo 1 year ago

Why not give the award to the greatest living songwriter in the world. The award is called the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. I think it's a little early to say they have "ventured away from their original intent". And for Cj's list, Dylan next, then Chuck, then ... ah, I've lost interest.

    Hey, Elton John!

And Jd, the drug experimenting in the sixties was more a response to the youth losing faith in the lies being told to them by the powers that be. Wait til the youth of today find out that Hawaii is a state and Obama really is a citizen.

"Bush was an avid reader contrary to popular belief."
That's right.. he likes to read children's books while planes fly into buildings.. Actually he wasn't really reading that much that day either..Free speech rules.McCartney has as much right to say what he likes of politicians...they have had no problem using celebrity to boost their agenda.. I guess ignorance is not bliss after all!

Where were all these Republican whiners when that congressman called out "liar" during Obama's state of the union speech? Where was their concern about civility and respect for the office then? Hypocrites.

The Library of Congress isn't some holy, religious site and the President isn't some untouchable King that can't be criticized or made fun of. This is America, people. What some British pop star says about a former President has nothing to do with how good the man's songs are.

Paul McCartney is an intelligent songwriter from an era when people were protesting wars and ignorance. To a left-leaning, anti-war, human and animal rights activist artist, I can imagine that President George W. Bush is, in many ways, the worst President the US ever had. I don't agree with Paul's political stance, but he has a right to believe what he wants to. Remember, America, is the most powerful nation on the planet. Every country knows the name of the President by his first name and because our nation's drama affects the whole world, its front page news in other countries. With great power, comes great responsibility and you have to accept the criticism.

James, proud republican who still loves Paul!

  • metoo 1 year ago

It may not have been the right venue, but if you believe in free speech then you should believe in it for everyone. What is more of interest to me is to see the comments on the web that call for his painful death and for him to be shot (Paul). That explains how scarey the right has become. Many other's are referring to President O by his middle name. Now the only reason to do that is rather racist. They are angry the president is currrently not a rich white man. Says more about that side than Paul's comment says.

"The award should have went to an American composer - that is what it was meant for." - CJ

It should be - Should have "GONE". Please find a library!

The Beatles were and are huge in the US and the world. I have no problem with a non citizen getting this award if they had the affect Paul has had. Most US bands today will say they were influenced by Paul and Jogn (and George and Ringo).

"George thinks a bibliography is a biography of people in the bible" Laura Bush

Did anyone cry out for the librarian wife to say she was sorry?

Bush also admitted to never reading newspapers, magazines, or anything other than the Bible. Saying he was the most well read president is one of the funniest things I have ever heard - not that he is out of office.

I've loved Paul ever since I was 10 years old. I'm 57 now, so he and I have a lot of history. But, God love him, he can't help being such a liberal thinker. He came from a generation that rebelled on every level. I used to feel that way too, but now I am a Conservative with regard to politics and social issues. I didn't vote for President Obama, but I have prayed earnestly for him to lead us responsibly. I will forgive Paul because I've never known him to be mean spirited in his public comments. I think he actually was just trying to make a joke. He has given me so much joy over the years that I could never condemn him, although I can't agree with everything he thinks.

Paul is my idol. I'm 15 and have been listening to his music since I was 3. However, I'm rather surprised that he took such a cheap shot at the ex-president. This whole argument has gone out of control with the idea of "free speech." No one is claiming that Paul wasn't aloud to say what he said. We're saying that he wasn't showing any class. The "sad" truth that the liberals don't want to understand is the fact that if he went to Harvard and got an MBA, let alone was President of the United States, he has to be a genius. I don't agree with Obama. That doesn't mean that I won't call him a genius. For one to have made the right moves to be elected, he has to be a genius. I idolize Sir Paul more than I do anyone else in the world, but it just goes to show that even someone as perfect as McCartney can still make a mistake.

OBAMA IS THE WORST PRESIDENT OF ALL TIME. HE IS SLEEZY, NO CLASS, BUFFOON, THIEF, AND SHADY. HE STOLE THE ELECTION FROM HILLARY, HE IS DESTROYING THE COUNTRY. WHO VOTED THIS GUY IN? IF OBAMA WAS A WHITE MAN, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE JOHN EDWARDS, A NOBODY AND HILLARY WOULD HAVE BEEN OUR PRESIDENT TODAY. THIS GUY WON BECAUSE OF THE LIBERAL MEDIA. OBAMA IS NOT A GOOD SPEAKER, HE SUTTERS LIKE A CLOWN WHEN HE IS NERVOUS.
PAUL SHOLD HAVE REFUSED THE AWARD FROM THIS GUY!!!!

Nothing like a political discussion to have people make asses out of themselves. Well, that and religion perhaps. The 2 things in the world that people think they know the most about when in reality they know the least.

It's no "bigger than Jesus" affair, that's for sure. Speaking of which, do you think Paul was proud of HIS quote on the cover of the same issue of DateBook that had John's famous quote ? Let's just say it's probably NOT one he shared with his good buddy Obama.

I am surprised at some of the angry all caps vitriol McCartneys comment aroused.I am also not surprised that McCartney is anti-Bush as I wrote earlier, Bush raised his fist and procliamed "Goodbye from the Worlds biggest polluter" at his last G-8 conference in London and the enviornment has long been an important issue for him. What is is so unfortunate is politics has become people talking at each other- no real dialougue and it's a shame as I see valid points on both sides of the spectrum. It's as if each side learns a "narrative" simular to susceptable muuslims in the middleeast and facts, diverse opinion or debate is reduced to name calling and ALL CAPS ranting.

Macca's comment was lighthearted, if worn out, joke.

Now if Lennon were still around to receive this award he might have said something about being pleased to get this award from a President who not only knows how to read, but is also not a war criminal (yet anyway).

Imagine the hysterical outcry from *that* kind of remark...

  • Rob 1 year ago

Steve..i have noticed some political bias in your recent articles since Paul's comment on our previous president. With all due respect, i liked it much better when you left your political opinions out of the Beatle/McCartney/Vintage news.

  • reayx5 1 year ago

I just find Paul's comment disappointing. Why be disrespectful to anyone? Would he make a comment like that if the subject of his "joke" was present? It is mean-spirited; no matter who it is directed towards. This type of thing reminds me of people belittling Linda for her singing... I bet if they came face-to-face with Paul they wouldn't say anything.

    Chris

What a rude and uncalled for comment. I thought that Paul was more of a gentleman and more than that, an adult. I don't think Paul has spent that much time in libraries, unless he was smoking pot in the bathroom.

I AM A REGISTERED DEMOCRAT, BUT VOTED FOR PALIN/MCCAIN AFTER OBAMA, CLEARLY STOLE THE ELECTION FROM HILLARY. OBAMA IS SHADY, HE IS THE WORST PRESIDENT EVER. NO QUALIFICATIONS, NO NOTHING. HE IS DRIVING THE COUNTRY DOWN THE TOILETTE. WE SHOULD ALL COME TOGETHER AND HAVE A HUGE POSTER AT PAUL SHOWS READING " OBAMA IS WORSE THAN BUSH!" OR " OBAMA IS RUINING OUR ECONOMY" BACK IN 2001-2002 PAUL WAS TOTALLY FOR BUSH, HE SAID TO SUPPORT HIM, AND BUSH GABE HIM THE OKAY TO SING AT THE CONCERT FOR NEW YORK..AND HOW HE DOES THIS? NO GOOD!!!!

The times we live in are ugly enough. It's too bad Paul had to add to that ugliness. He could have made the comment to Seinfeld after the mics were turned off. And I say that without commenting on whether or not I agree. That's not important. Common decency...

This is such a non issue. Late night talk shows have been ridiculing Bush for years and years, and suddenly he's off limits. This is a typical Republican trick. Make something out of nothing, like Sarah Palin's crying jag over the Letterman jokes or the Simpson's. They use these flimsy excuses to rally the base.
It's all just silly political posturing. These same people have absolutely no problem with Obama being dipicted in WHITE FACE and a HITLER mustache, calling him a SOCILAIST, pictures with water mellons etc. All of that of course is fair game. I personally find THAT repugnant as it's racist in tone. This McCartney flap is nothing but a spin, gee George Bush doesn't read... is this some kind of news to somebody? Bush himself is the one who said he doesn't read. And Steve M. I'd appreciate it if you keep your eliminate your personal politics from the McCartney forum. The problem I have is the GOP is all for war to protect our rights, it's just that they can't be exercised.
