On Tuesday, January 8, 2013, Public Policy Polling released the results of a recent poll that shows just how unpopular Congress is. Things which are currently more desirable than Congress include not only root canals, head lice and cockroaches, but also carnies, traffic jams and colonoscopies. Currently, Congress holds a record for the lowest approval rating in American history, hanging at an embarrassing nine percent.
Is the nation surprised at the poll results? Not likely, since Congress is made up of a large room full of politicians and, historically speaking, politicians are not generally known for their popularity, self-less acts and concern over the well-being of the country as a whole rather than their own personal gain.
Even the President himself knows that he lacks popularity, much like the washed up 50-something-year-old beauty queen still talking about her days of being a high school cheerleader, finally realizing that nobody really cares anymore. Obama stated in a March campaign event, “I know I'm a little grayer now, and it’s not as trendy to be an Obama supporter, because it’s not as fresh. Those posters are kind of rolled up in some closet somewhere.”
Presidents, or any other politician, should never be elected on trendiness, as it takes much more to run an entire country than handing out free cell phones, free (ie. higher taxes will pay for it) healthcare and empty promises. And yes, those posters are probably rolled up in a closet somewhere, along with the hopes of the next four years bringing about the change that this country needs.
Fret not politicians, President and members of Congress, for there is hope. A viable option for reclaiming popularity may be to retire and start a new career as a used-car salesman, because yes, even they are more popular than Congress. Also, take comfort in the fact that there are indeed some things that are even less desirable than Congress, which include eboli, meth labs and gonorrhea.
