One year after young American voters helped put President Barack Obama in office they are unhappy with virtually every major policy he has implemented since his re-election.
A Harvard University survey of 2,000 young people between the ages of 18 and 29 released on Wednesday shows more than 50 percent of respondents in the survey said they disapproved of how Obama handled key issues in his second term, including Syria, Iran, the economy, healthcare and the federal budget deficit. The poll was taken between October 30 and November 11, according to a Reuters report out Wednesday.
Only 46 percent of this normally loyal group that Mr. Obama and the Democrats depend on each election year would cast their vote for the president if the election were held today, according to the study.
By contrast, some 55 percent of the survey’s respondents who say they cast ballots in the 2012 presidential election said they had voted for Obama, compared with 33 percent for Romney. The results show a 9 point drop in support for Obama among young Americans meaning a minority of them would vote for him today.
The results follow a spate of bad polling for Mr. Obama including a separate CNN/ORC poll released on November 25 that showed a growing number of Americans doubted Obama's ability to manage the nation, including his signature domestic policy initiative, the healthcare reform law widely known as Obamacare.
The poll showed that support for Obamacare has withered among young voters with some 57 percent of respondents in the Harvard survey saying they disapproved of the Obamacare law and 40 percent believe the quality of health care will worsen while about half expect health care costs to rise.
