Politics or sedition? Rush Limbaugh calls for military coup

When does a political joke become sedition? Rush Limbaugh is calling for a military coup, and the joke, if it is a joke, is not funny. Rush, speaking about President Obama's upcoming speech at West Point, expressed hope that military officials at the Academy would "detain" President Obama.

Regardless of one's politics, to suggest that military officials at the United States Military Academy detain the President of the United States is to suggest a military coup. Such a suggestion is sedition. Limbaugh is advocating military insurrection.

Limbaugh has made similar remarks before. Speaking of the Honduran coup Rush had this to say: "The coup was what many of you wish would happen here, without the military"; and, "If we had any good luck, Honduras would send some people here and help us get our government back".

Recently Newsmax columnist John L. Perry was disgraced and humiliated after making a similar suggestion. Newsmax immediately removed the column and distanced their publication from any affiliation with Perry.


It is doubtful that Limbaugh will suffer any meaningful consequences. Those on the right who know better are afraid of Rush. While others on the right, so called "dittoheads", know very little.

These kind of inflammatory remarks by Rush and other right wing nuts continue to damage the credibility of conservatives and the GOP. While Rush may comfort and entertain the knuckle dragging Neanderthals, his outrageous remarks fall flat in middle America. The vast majority of Americans want nothing to do with Limbaugh's right wing nuttiness.

    Sorry Stoner the "vast majority of Americans" agree with El Rushbo, have you taken a look at the number of listeners he has been getting daily for the last 20-years. There is a reason El Rushbo has reigned as the top dog for so long Mikey, it'sbecause the King of Political talk brings TRUTH TO POWER Mikey. barry isn't well liked at all by those in our military and who can blame them, he is our weakest president ever and that includes Carter.     Rush Limbaugh's comment is an insult to not only the cadets at West Point, but to every professional military man and woman in the United States. Shame on you "gunnery". If you are truly in the Marine Corp, you are neither professional nor patriotic, and I suggest you resign.

    I spent 20 years in the Air Force, was a Radar Nav on B52's. I know how the those in the Military would react to Rush's comment, they would accept it as strictly satire. The chances of a military coup in this country are zero, anyone who would try to make a big deal out of Rush's joke is an idiot.

    Oran's Dictionary of the Law (1983) defines treason as: "...[a]...citizen's actions to help a foreign government overthrow, make war against, or seriously injure the [parent nation]." In many nations, it is also often considered treason to attempt or conspire to overthrow the government, even if no foreign country is aided or involved by such an endeavour.

    Gunnery... If a "vast majority of Americans" agree with El Rushbo, as you call him, why isn't McCain and Palin in office now? Do you claim to know the minds of most of American soldiers?
    I would suggest that perhaps you and your friends might dislike The Prisdent of the United States of America, but that doesn't equal "a majority of Americans".
    Perhaps, you were in the "majority" some years ago and are no longer and having a difficult time getting used to it.

No person with the intelligence to put a sentence together would have come to the conclusions that you have, so you must be a complete bias hack whole lacks even a little creativity. I listened to this segment and what Rush said was nowhere close to seditious. In fact, he was contrasting the honor of our military to the cowardliness of such an inexperienced, and dithering commander in chief. How about a few minutes with Jeremiah Wright to explain to us just what Obama thinks of the military?

    Rush has been on the air in a powerful way for all these years basically because he lobby's for big corporate interests thus providing him with all the tools necessary to unfairly dominate the airwaves of talk radio.

    I've seen plenty of progressive stations come, and win in the ratings but then, the affiliate stations get taken over by ESPN radio and other big timers.

    I don't think he cares about the country as much as he does making money pretending he cares.

    I think it's the Military's duty to remain true to their Oath of Office to "protect and defend the Constitution of the U.S. from ALL enemies foreign and DOMESTIC." Obama and the Congress are the biggest enemies to our constitution that I've ever witnessed. What's the problem in someone fulfulling their required Oath of Office?

    The current Administration aided by the criminal Congress are doing everything in their power to DESTROY our economic system so they can institute a TOTALITARIAN government in it's place. Ain't gonna happen in my lifetime!

    The only purpose of the US government was to "... secure these rights,". From the Declaration of Independence: ".... That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Governemnt. ..." (Personally, I consider it the people's DUTY to alter or abolish....)

    Michael, thanks for the article. I did one here on examiner about a somewhat similar issue: the "pray for obama" verse that amounts to a death threat. Exactly how many times can the extreme right make cute jokes about killing Obama before it adds up to more than just "an isolated incident" or quotes "taken out of context"?
