Politics of power: Jon Stewart's 9/11 first responders victory

It is official. Comedy Central's Jon Stewart is a big time, heavy hitting, political player. Stewart single handedly turned the tide of the 9-11 responder debate. In his final broadcast of the year, Stewart devoted his entire show to shaming the Republican opposition into submission. He was successful.

Wednesday the 9/11 first responders bill passed by a voice vote or "unanimous consent" in the U.S. Senate. The move is great news for patriotic Americans who became sick after working in the dust of the World Trade Center site after the 9/11 tragedy.

Senate Republicans had unanimously filibustered the 9/11 first responders bill earlier this month, effectively killing the legislation. Stewart spent nine minutes of air time attacking Republican Senators who didn't support it, and in so doing exposed the complete and utter hypocrisy of those same Republican Senators.

Stewart's attention to the 9/11 first responders issue pushed other media outlets to pay attention to the issue. Stewart's advocacy for the 9/11 first responders bill is responsible for overcoming Senate Republicans' opposition to the legislation.

The bill, the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, named for James Zadroga, a 9/11 first responder who died in 2006 of respiratory disease, is a bill that would create a trust fund to cover the health care costs of surviving police, firemen, emergency medical technicians and clean up crews who worked for months in the wreckage of the World Trade Center.

Stewart did not do it all by himself. Yet Stewart brought national attention to the issue when nobody else cared. New York Mayor Bloomberg, in a statement released by City Hall after the bill passed in the House and Senate yesterday, thanked several politicians, and then gave a special shout-out to "great New Yorkers like Jon Stewart."
