Assemblymember Anna Caballero (D AD-28), in a series of press conferences yesterday officially announced her candidacy for State Senate. “I have received calls from people throughout the District and the State, urging me to run for the State Senate Seat,” stated Caballero. “It has been an honor serving in the State Legislature, and I look forward to continuing to serve in this new capacity.”
As an incumbent she likely would have had little trouble getting a third term in the Assembly. Now, with an open seat, both Democrats and Republicans are developing potential candidates.
Earlier this year it became apparent Caballero was seriously preparing for the Senate run. Now it’s clear, and the competition for the Democratic 2010 primary is already underway. No less than four experienced elected Democrats are developing campaigns.
Luis Alejo, Mayor Pro Tem of Watsonville, has organized a campaign ahead of the others. The attorney and past Sacramento legislative aid has been working as a staff attorney for Monterey County. “There are many issues impacting our communities that I will continue to work hard on, including fixing our state budget, creating new jobs for local workers, reforming our healthcare system, keeping our neighborhoods safe for our families, and providing our children with a high quality education,” The candidate has stated.
Jamie De La Cruz has been more cautious waiting to see how Caballero’s political moves developed. Now with a declaration of candidacy on file with the State, the San Benito County Supervisor is a serious contender.
Gilroy School District Trustee Dominguez Francisco early on planed to run. He profiles himself as “set apart” from the other potential candidates. Known as a maverick with common sense he comes to the race with a decade of work on educational boards. He also has experience working for the State Legislature.
Eugenia Sanchez Mayor of Hollister, and elementary school teacher, prides herself on approachability and open-mindedness. Her community political involvement has addressed ballot measures to gang prevention, and more.
An interesting, but yet to declare candidate, is Rick Rivas The young politico could be a serious contender. He is a past legislative aid and Communications Director for Assemblymember Caballero. Currently, he is directing political operations for the Civil Justice Association of California.
Democrats have no shortage of experience or talent to chouse from. As the election cycle develops its likely the candidate list will shrink, but no matter what it's going to be interesting.

COLORLESS CABALLERO
Please, NOT Anna.
Hopefully, 2010 will see the demise of Ms. Caballero from the state political scene. For every one of her supporters, I believe there are ten voters who probably oppose the election of Ms. Caballero for state senator.
Voters are tired of the endless line of politicians who play the political game of musical chairs. Individuals who are in it for themselves and only secondarily serve the public who elects them.
Ms. Caballero has an extensive history of being a mediocre politician. She is colorless.
