In honor of spa week, I decided to feature one of the smaller salons. Here's the chance for the underdog to shine. I have been to Polished on several different occasions and the experienced is like no other. At Polished, you receive one on one attention in an intimate setting. From the dim lighting to the soft music I felt completely at peace and relaxed. Recently, I sat down with Nakia Dedmon, the owner of Polished, so that my readers could get more of a feel for what Polished is all about.
DA: Give me a brief overview of your background and why you decided to become an aesthetician?
ND: I started doing nails in high school and developed such a love for the industry that when I left Baltimore and moved to Atlanta for college, I tried to continue offering services. As you can imagine, as a starving college student, that dream did not come to fruition...at least not immediately. Over the years, while living in Atlanta and building a life for myself there I was laid off of work and at that point decided it was time to start working on my own personal dreams. I enrolled in a school that offered a nail care program and upon finishing that, decided that I also wanted to expose my clients to the wonders of the skin care industry with all of its wonderful attributes that contribute to health and wellness. Over the years of working in the industry I always felt that I could service to my clients better if I we're able to make decisions related to how the business is run and Polished is the fruit of all of those years of labor and love.
DA: Did you work for someone else prior to opening your own business?
ND: Yes I've worked for several salons and spas over the years
DA: Do you do all the skin care treatments yourself? How many people do you have on staff?
ND: Yes I do all treatments myself as I work for myself.
DA: How does your salon differ from the competition that’s out there?
ND: At my salon, clients get personalized one on one attention in an intimate setting, free of the interference from the outside world. During their treatments I spend time educating my clients on skin and nail health and how to maintain it. They get to experience personalized service designed have them leaving feeling better than they did when they arrived.
DA: What do you do with a new client coming in for skin care treatment?
ND: When my clients arrive I first have them fill out a health history form that tells me about their skin, lifestyle habits, etc. We then go through a thorough skin consultation where we first discuss the clients concerns in details as well as their expectations of their treatments and commitment level. Afterward, they receive a deep cleansing, thorough skin analysis where we discuss what I see under my magnifying lamp and how I plan to treat it, that's followed by exfoliation to brighten the skin, soften it and it gets rid of excess dead skin build up. If necessary, I perform extractions to rid the skin of blackheads. After extractions, the client experiences a 20 minute upper body massage followed by the application of a treatment serum and a mask and then moisturizer.
DA: What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
ND: Seeing my clients pleased with the outcome of their services.
DA: What type of products do you use in the salon?
ND: I use Dermalogica and Skin Script
DA: Do you offer any weekly or ongoing specials that my readers should know about?
ND: I offer specials monthly that are usually tied to Health and Wellness and causes.
DA: How can you be reached? (Websites, social networks, email, phone numbers etc.)
ND: I can be reached via phone, email, and social media.
