Dover, TN - It has happened again - a companion dog has been shot and killed by the police.
In this case, the dog's name was Girl - she was a German shepherd who was a constant companion to 73 yr-old Blanks "Buddy" Phippen.
Back on January 21, Buddy and Girl were sitting in their front yard when a car crashed into a nearby utility pole.
From this point on, details become a bit muddy.
Buddy told NewsChannel5.com that the responding sheriff's deputy told him to leave the scene. Though it is unclear in the news report, it appears that Buddy left, but his dog, "Girl" stayed behind.
At some point, the deputy claims that Girl began to growl and bark at him. He claims that he attempted to utilize a taser to fend her off, but that it "malfunctioned" and he was forced to shoot her.
The deputy fired four shots - three of which hit the German shepherd.
Girl was able to get as far as the driveway before she collapsed and died.
According to the report, Phippen exited his house and asked who shot his dog.
Again, there is a parting of the ways in the recount of how things played out. The sheriff has stated that Mr. Phippen advised the deputy that he understood why his dog was shot and that he acknowledged that she would have bitten him.
But Mr. Phippen told the news crew that he made no such statement.
The police will be conducting an investigation to ensure that proper protocol was followed on the part of the responding deputy.
On a personal note, I am baffled as to why Girl's guardian went back inside, leaving her outside with strangers.
Another dog failed - another life lost.
