A 2.5 pound shipment of marijuana was seized from the home of Cincinnati Bengals' wide receiver Jerome Simpson on Wednesday, September 21, 2011. Bengal's tackle Anthony Collins was at the home in Crestview Hills, Kentucky with Simpson at the time the police confiscated the package.
Police tracked the shipment all the way from California after a two-day investigation says a spokeswoman for the California Department of Justice.
There was a woman by the name of Aleen Smith who signed for the package at the Kentucky home right before police entered. The Bengals' receiver then gave consent for a search of his home in which the police found an additional six pounds of marijuana along with drug paraphernalia including "packaging materials, scales, and smoking devices."
The two Bengals players were detained, but not arrested. The case was to be addressed on Thursday, September 22, 2011 by the Kenton Count (Ky.) Prosecutor's Office.
A government-funded organization that coordinates marijuana enforcement called the National Marijuana Initiative had its head Tommy LaNier speak out about the incident. He said that the home was set up as a distribution network.
"They had it all set up to receive supplies of high-grade marijuana from Northern California, and from there, it was being distributed from that resident," said LaNier.
There has been no word yet from the Bengals or the NFL on the situation.
Collins is a back-up offensive lineman who did not play this past Sunday in a loss to the Denver Broncos. Simpson on the other hand caught a career-high 146 yards in the game.
