The attack occurred on Sept. 1 shortly after 11 a.m. in broad daylight, cops said. The female victim was reportedly walking alone down a hiking trail near the park’s Hendrickson Avenue entrance when she was attacked.
Cops described the attacker as a black male between the ages of 29 and 35. The victim told police that he was 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9 and had a thin build, investigators said.
The man is said to have short hair with braids on the side and was wearing a white T-shirt and black pants.
Police closed all entrances to the park Sunday as they investigated the sex assault. Nassau County police officers, state troopers and parks police were all on scene throughout the day Sunday working to canvas the park for clues. A police canine and aviation unit were also called to the scene.
Authorities said there was no recent suspicious activity in the area and investigators are now looking to the public for assistance in the investigation.
Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call State Park Police at 631-321-3700.
