Update 1/28/14 2:00 p.m. (PST): Cody Phillips has been arrested and is currently behind bars.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Bancroft, Wis., man who is accused of beating his dog to death with a hammer, reported Monday's publication of the Stevens Point Journal.
On Monday, 26-year-old Cody Phillips was scheduled to appear at a mandatory court date, but he failed to show up.
Phillips is accused of bludgeoning his dog to death with a hammer on Jan. 19; he allegedly beat the dog because the dog had defecated in Phillip's trailer home.
A responding deputy discovered the deceased dog in a snow bank - the severe wounds on the dog suggested that the dog had been struck multiple times. According to the complaint, the dog's jaw was broken and there was blood coming out of the dog's ears.
The deputy noted that Phillips stated that he was "sick of dealing with it every day," in reference to the dog.
The brutal incident has Phillips facing a felony animal cruelty charge which could put him behind bars for over three years if he is convicted.
