The City of Minneapolis, working in tandem with the Minneapolis Police Department, has issued a press release regarding a string of at least five armed robberies that occurred on December 31st. Four of these robberies took place at local SuperAmerica stores, and one at a Walgreens. The following is a list of the locations in the order that each was robbed.
SuperAmerica- 6000 Portland Avenue South
Walgreens- 2426 Hennepin Avenue
SuperAmerica- 2501 Hennepin Avenue
SuperAmerica- 2200 Lyndale Avenue
SuperAmerica- 4320 East Lake Street
All of these robberies happened between the hours of 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
The robber is described as an African American man in his late 20’s or early 30’s. He is heavy-set and was wearing all black, including a black face mask, covering everything except for his eyes. He also wore glasses to cover his eyes during at least two of the robberies.
In addition to stealing hundreds of dollars at each location, the robber also stole prescription narcotics at the Walgreens location. The specific name of the narcotics has not been released because police say it might hinder their ongoing investigation.
In some of the robberies, the man came in and went straight to the counter, pulled out a semi-automatic gun and demanded the money. In other instances he appeared to be shopping, then when the time was right he showed his gun and announced that he was robbing the store.
Police have provided photographs of the robber from surveillance footage that came from one of the businesses that was struck.
Both police and residents have commented that they were alarmed at this string of armed robberies that occurred in what is usually a relatively quiet and peaceful area of South Minneapolis.
