A Sag Harbor man was arrested Sunday after police stopped his car for having an expired inspection sticker and found an illegally modified rifle in the vehicle, according to a Southampton Town Police news release.
Jameson S. Ellis, 45, was arrested Nov. 3 along Main Street in the Village of Sagaponack, police said. He was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a firearm, prohibited use of a firearm, and operating an uninspected motor vehicle.
Cops said a Southampton Town Police officer noticed Ellis’ vehicle had an expired inspection sticker at 8:35 a.m. on Sunday. During the traffic stop, cops found him to be in possession of a rifle “which had been illegally modified to be silenced,” the news release said.
Authorities said the charge for prohibited use of a firearm stems from a violation of the state’s environmental conservation law, which prohibits the use of a rifle for hunting on Long Island.
Ellis was being held at Southampton Town Police Headquarters and was scheduled to be arraigned Monday at Southampton Town Justice Court in Hampton Bays.
