Police probe bias incident in East Meadow

Nassau County police detectives are probing a bias incident that occurred Saturday morning in East Meadow after two swastikas were found drawn on a sidewalk, Nassau County police said.

Detectives said First Precinct patrol officers responded to reports of the swastikas drawn in chalk on a sidewalk near Andrea Road and Sherwood Road on Saturday. It is believed that the episode, which is being investigated as a bias incident, occurred between 8 a.m. and 12:56 p.m. Saturday, police said in a news release.

The area that the graffiti was discovered is a residential neighborhood in East Meadow. The East Meadow Jewish Center is located just a few blocks from the intersection and a public middle school is also nearby.

No motive was provided by police, but the incident comes just one day before Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is celebrated beginning in the evening hours on Sunday.

Detectives are now seeking the public’s assistance. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
