A call came in to the Baltimore Police Department reporting a vicious dog. But when Officer Dan Waskiewicz arrived, he discovered the pitbull was the victim of neighborhood children who were chasing him and throwing glass bottles at him.
The officer intervened and called to the dog who quickly came over to him, tucked his tail between his legs and sat down next to the officer. When Officer Waskiewicz bent down to see if he had a tag, the dog smothered him in kisses. Clearly this was no vicious dog.
The officer put the dog in his squad car, and the tired animal curled up and went to sleep. Officer Waskiewicz took him to a local animal shelter. But he couldn’t get those friendly kisses out of his mind. A few days later he returned to the shelter and found that no one had claimed or adopted the dog.
Officer Waskiewicz adopted him and named the dog Bo, and he now has an absolute best friend.
Jen Swanson, Executive Director of the Baltimore Humane Society said, “Because of Officer Waskiewicz’s astute response, he saved the life of an innocent animal and avoided what could have been a situation with a tragic ending.”
The story of Officer Waskiewica and Bo went viral thanks to a post by the dog rescue group Concrete Angels.
“So often we hear stories where law enforcement officers rush to judgment with violent action,” Swanson said. “But when Dan Waskiewicz answered the call he first observed the situation calmly before he acted. We believe he deserves high praise and is truly an asset to the animals and citizens of the city he serves.”
Waskiewicz will by honored by the Baltimore Humane Society. Let’s hope that there are more people like him out there, committed to saving the lives of animals who surely deserve a second chance and a loving home.
