Someone abandoned and tied a purebred, pregnant German shepherd to a park bench in Newark, Calif., and while the dog was alone, she began to deliver her puppies, reported Wednesday's ABC 7 News.

Officer Jennifer Bloom came upon the concerning situation and quickly realized that the stunning dog was in distress; the laboring mother, still tied to the bench, was attempting to bury one of the puppies who had already died.

Realizing that expert help was needed, Officer Bloom carefully loaded the laboring dog into her vehicle and rushed her to the Central Veterinary Hospital in Fremont; on the trip, more puppies were delivered in the car.

Beatriz Retana, a veterinary technician at the clinic, described the frantic moment when Bloom arrived:

The police officer was knocking on the back door. She was a little freaked out, just like I was,"

When all was said and done, the beautiful, young dog, estimated at just a year of age, delivered nine puppies; two did not survive.

The new mother has been named "Bristol, " and she, along with her puppies, will eventually be up for adoption, if an owner does not come forward.

The police are treating this disturbing situation as a case of animal cruelty.
