A suspect dressed as Santa Claus held up a bank in Port Orange Monday afternoon, according to Port Orange Police. The white male suspect walked into the Sun Trust Bank on Nova Road at Village Trail at 3:13 Monday afternoon, according to police spokesperson Lt. J. Jakovenko, and carried a wrapped package with him. Police say he placed the package on the teller’s counter and gave the teller a note demanding cash and “…insinuating the package was harmful.” The man left the bank and got into a dark colored vehicle, after being given an undisclosed amount of currency.

Because the suspect left his package on the teller’s counter, the bank was evacuated and secured. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called in and determined that the package “…was not an explosive device.” Port Orange Police blocked traffic from the area while the Bomb Squad checked the package and during the robbery investigation.

The suspect is described as an adult white male, around 6 feet tall and with a medium build. Police say anyone with information about the case can contact Port Orange Police Detective George Oliveira at (386) 506-5895.
