Bobby "BJ" Smith, 21, of Mableton, was a student at Tuskegee University where he was attending a block party on Friday. At some point, party-goers heard gun shots, including Bobby. As he was running away he was shot in the back. According to his parents, Bobby was not the intended target of the shooting, but happened to be in the way.
Bobby is remembered fondly by friends and staff members at the school. After graduating from South Cobb High School in 2010, he started his college career at Tuskegee University. He was a tennis player for the school's team and was majoring in finance.
This is the second time Bobby's parents have faced the loss of a child. Just 18 months ago, Bobby's sister died in a traffic accident.
The school will be holding a memorial for Bobby on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday.
So far, police aren't sure of the motive for the attack, but they told Bobby's parents that they feel they will have a suspect in custody soon. Both the Tuskegee Police Department and the Alabama Bureau of Investigations are actively working on the case.
Bobby had just become a father to a baby son only a little over a month before the shooting.
