Talia Kaplan, 18, was arrested Dec. 12 at a Walmart store in the upstate town of Oneonta. In a news release, state police said her arrest was the result of a shoplifting complaint from the store located on State Route 23.
Investigators later found Kaplan had stolen approximately $76 in merchandise from the retail giant, the news release said.
She was released after being issued an appearance ticket and will appear at the Oneonta Town Court next week for arraignment.
Update [2-4-14 3:30 p.m.]: A representative at the Oneonta Town Court said the petit larceny charge against Kaplan was dismissed after she agreed to plead guilty to a non-criminal offense of trespassing. Kaplan was ordered to pay a $125 fine and a $125 court surcharge. The case has since been disposed. Otsego County’s Chief Assistant District Attorney, Michael Getman, said the plea offer is standard for defendants without a criminal history.
