Police lieutenant charged in sexting relationship with teenager

Twenty-seven year veteran with the Anne Arundel police department, James Cifala is charged with exchanging sexually explicit picture messages with an underage girl. James Cifala is a 47-year-old resident of Edgewater.

Over the course of just three short weeks in the summer of 2009, More than 1,300 messages were communicated between the lieutenant and the teenage girl. The investigation of Cifala has been underway since September after the child's parents contacted the FBI.

During a search of Cifala's home on January 20th, agents were able to match furniture in his home to the background of sexually explicit pictures on the victim's cell phone. After his arrest, Cifala had an appearance in U.S. District Court in Baltimore.

Lieutenant Cifala has been suspended and faces between 5 and 20 years in prison. He is currently in federal custody and will face a detention hearing on January 22.
