A Lawrence man was arrested Saturday afternoon on drugs and weapons charges after officers conducting a traffic stop found a stash of marijuana in his car, Nassau County police said.
Kyheim Lameek Bethea, 32, was arraigned Sept. 8 at First District Court in Hempstead and ordered held on $125,000 cash bail or $250,000 bond.
Officers from the Bureau of Special Operations were on patrol in Lawrence on Saturday and spotted Bethea behind the wheel of a 1998 Nissan. Cops said he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt when they saw him driving east on Mott Avenue in Lawrence, which prompted a traffic stop.
During the traffic stop, officers reportedly smelled marijuana coming from his car. Under a jacket on the backseat of the car, police found two large clear bags “containing a substance believed to be marijuana,” a news release said.
Cops also found a loaded .40 caliber handgun in the mesh pocket of a backpack that was in Bethea’s trunk, authorities said.
Bethea was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana and operating a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt.
He is due back in court on Wednesday.
