A Kings Park man was arrested Friday accused of killing his grandmother after an argument escalated to violence, Suffolk County police said.
Clerence Newcomb, 25, was arrested early Friday morning after police received a 911 call reporting that a woman was lying on the floor of a home at 64 Berg Ave. Police said when officers arrived to the home around 4:35 a.m., they found 82-year-old Kathleen Newcomb dead on the floor.
Investigators said Clerence Newcomb told them that he had assaulted his grandmother after the two became engaged in a verbal argument. According to police sources, the argument began over what show the two were going to watch on television. It was not clear how the retired psychiatric nursing director was killed and no weapons were recovered from the scene.
Newcomb faces one count of first-degree manslaughter. He was scheduled to be arraigned Saturday morning at First District Court in Central Islip, but was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital late Friday night for evaluation, police said. It was not immediately clear when the suspect would be released for arraignment.
