Just days after it was reported that a dog in Florida accidentally shot a man in the leg, another dog apparently managed to fire a pistol with his paw. According to a report by the Eagle-Tribune on March 3, the shooter this time was a Police K-9 in Lawrence, Mass.
Ivan, who is on the rolls of the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, was assisting Lt. John Pickles in the recovery of the weapon after it was tossed into a snowbank. Police responded to a call about gunshots being heard in the vicinity of Reservoir and Haverhill Streets at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday and noticed a vehicle with three male occupants fleeing the scene. When Officer Jeff Hart gave chase, one of the suspects tossed the weapon out the window.
When a K-9 unit was called for backup to assist in locating the gun, Ivan apparently pulled the trigger while digging to uncover the weapon. The bullet was fired into a home on Crescent Street, but unlike the earlier incident where the dog’s owner was shot in the leg, no one was hurt by the accidental discharge.
Ivan has not been suspended as a result of the incident, and it’s unknown whether he was praised for locating the pistol, or reprimanded for unsafe procedures in the recovery of a weapon.
