Police identified a suspect Tuesday who they say planted a credit card skimming device on a ticket machine at a Long Island Rail Road station in Baldwin, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said April 8.

MTA Police say Vasile Ovidiu Haidau, 35, is currently being sought by investigators in connection with the skimming scam investigation. Detectives said he was spotted by officers Monday morning while he was “tampering” with a ticket vending machine at the Baldwin Long Island Rail Road station.

Police officers tried to question and arrest him, but Haidau “actively resisted” and was able to get away from cops before fleeing the scene, authorities said.

He was last spotted behind the wheel of a rental car – a 2014 blue Volvo sedan with NY license plate GXR5959 – and headed west on Sunrise Highway in Baldwin, police said.

Haidau, who is a Romanian national, has had his visa revoked and is known to travel with another man in Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and on Long Island, cops said. Police also believe he may be connected to an identity theft ring that was busted last year in California.

The MTA announced earlier Tuesday that Long Island Rail Road employees found the credit card skimming devices and hidden cameras attached to ticket machines at the Baldwin station during an inspection last week. The agency said the employees immediately called police, who released a news advisory on Tuesday.

Police urge anyone with information about Haidau’s whereabouts to call detectives at 516-222-6501.
