Police hunt for transient accused of sexually assaulting 12-year-old girl

Police are searching for a 21-year-old man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 12-year-old Sumter County girl.

They have issued arrest warrants for Mr. Markice Hunter, charging him with second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, according to the Sumter Police Department.

The incident allegedly happened in March, but wasn't reported until last week, according to a news release.

The child's mother told police Mr. Hunter, a family acquaintance, sexually assaulted her daughter, Chief Russell S. Roark, III said.

Police did not release any details on where the alleged assault occurred or if it happened more than once.

Mr. Hunter is known to be a transient, staying at different locations in Sumter County, Chief Roark said. His last known address was 155 Apollo St. in Wedgefield.

Investigators said he has connections in Newark, NJ.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Sumter police at (803) 436-2717 or CrimeStoppers at (803) 436-2718. Tipsters can remain anonymous and are eligible for a cash reward.
