John Martinolich, 28, was arraigned Oct. 8 at Southampton Town Justice Court on grand larceny, stolen property, unlicensed driving and drug charges, police said.
According to investigators, a 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander was stolen from the parking lot of the Bel Aire Cove motel at 20 Shinnecock Road in Hampton Bays around 10 p.m. on Monday. After detectives responded to the scene and took a report, they began scouring the neighborhood for the crossover SUV.
It didn’t take them long to find the vehicle traveling north on County Route 24 near Bellows Pond Road. When they stopped the vehicle, they found Martinolich behind the wheel, cops said.
He was charged with third-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Police made a second arrest in connection with the car theft. They booked 18-year-old Stephen Mineo on a charge of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property.
Detectives said the two men were taken to Southampton Town Police headquarters and held for arraignment.
Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call Southampton Town detectives at 631-702-2230. All calls will be kept confidential.
