Police: Hempstead man drove drunk with child in car

A Hempstead man was arrested on felony charges Tuesday after cops found that he was drunk when he was stopped for driving the wrong way down a one-way street, Nassau County police said.

Oscar Reyes-Zavala, 24, of 60 Hendrickson Place was stopped by Highway Patrol officers after he was observed driving the wrong direction on Hewlett Street in Hempstead around 5:10 a.m. on Tuesday, police said.

When Reyes-Zavala pulled over his 2001 Nissan, officers discovered that he was driving “under the influence of an alcoholic beverage,” a police news release said.

A 6-year-old child, who was not wearing a seat belt, was found in the rear passenger’s seat, cops said. According to the news release, the child, who is not related to Reyes-Zavala, was released to her mother.

Police arrested Reyes-Zavala at the scene and his vehicle was impounded. He was charged with a felony count of aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, as well as DWI, first-degree and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, endangering the welfare of a child and numerous traffic violations.

Reyes-Zavala was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead. As of this writing, details from the arraignment were not available.
