The arrests took place at 11:35 a.m. on Sept. 25, after more police officers were deployed to watch the area surrounding West Babylon Junior High School, authorities said. The extra patrols were in response to complaints by the community that drug sales were taking place near the school.
The alleged hand-to-hand drug sale occurred on Joan Place, near the school’s football field. Officials said a First Precinct officer was “in very close proximity to the school” when he allegedly witnessed the transaction.
Police said Ramel McClinton, 19, of West Babylon, allegedly sold an unspecified controlled substance to Frederick Johnson, 46, of Babylon.
Police charged McClinton with criminal sale of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of school grounds, as well as third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Johnson was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
The two men will be arraigned at a later date.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call First Squad detectives at 631-854-8152.
