Police dog fires gun in bizarre search in Massachusetts

A police dog accidentally fired a gun with this paw during a bizarre incident in Massachusetts on Sunday. The K9 member of the Essex County Sheriff's Department was called in to help search for an unknown object that a suspect had thrown in a snowbank. According to CNN, as the dog was feverishly searching, his paw hit the trigger of a gun firing it. "I surmise that the snow was there for a week, and it was probably like ice," Lawrence (MA) Police Chief John Romero is quoted as saying. "The individual probably was not able to bury it very deep, and he had no time."

Police say no one -- of the two or four legged kind -- was hurt when the dog named, Ivan, fired the semiautomatic Ruger. The dog and the officers, however, were pretty shocked by the strange incident. "Everyone on the scene was startled, including Ivan," Romero said.

Following the recovery of the gun, police arrested three men and charged them with possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, receiving a firearm with a defaced serial number and receiving stolen property. The suspects are due in court today (Monday).

The gun was reported stolen in New Hampshire in October 2012.
