It wasn't a scene from the 1980s comedy "Police Academy" or "Naked Gun". On Tuesday, police in Georgia engaged in a high-speed chase with a delivery truck not because it carried hundreds of delicious doughnuts but because it was stolen.
According to a Feb. 12 WSB-TV report, a Gwinnett County man faces more than a dozen charges after he stole a Krispy Kreme delivery truck at a local gas station. And yes, it was loaded with delicious goodies.
James Freddy Major went into the driver's seat and took off with the vehicle loaded with sweet-smelling doughnuts while the driver was delivering the inventory to a local Quick Shop store. It's likely that Major will at least serve several months in prison since several surveillance cameras caught footage of the crime in progress.
"Nobody would like the donut that much he would steal the whole truck,” said Quick Shop store owner Peter Thakkar. Police engaged in a 15-mile chase that must have looked strange, if not downright humorous, to other motorists who saw law enforcement vehicles trying to slow down a speeding doughnut truck.
Major drove the Krisy Kreme truck to a dead-end in a neighborhood and was arrested after he hit a mailbox and the roadside curb. The suspect attempted to flee on foot. Bad idea.
A police dog, who apparently was not distracted by the smell of fresh Krispy Kreme, tracked down the suspect. Major faces charges including driving under the influence and theft of a motor vehicle. He may also face traffic fines and penalties.
The judge won't be amused.
