Police are trying to identify the victim of a deadly Monday evening car fire, according to a news release from the Jackson Police Department.

Police said around 5:34 p.m. Monday, the Jackson Fire Department was called about a brush fire off the dead end of Ash Street, which is in the Hillcrest Circle neighborhood off East Chester Street.

The release said firefighters responded to the scene and found a car, in a field and fully engulfed in flames. The fire was put out and a body, which appeared to be that of a man’s, was found just outside the car. The body was burnt beyond recognition and the race could not be determined.

An assistant county medical examiner and Jackson police responded to the scene when the body was discovered.

The body will be sent to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Nashville for identification and to determine the exact cause of death.

The release said the car appeared to be a newer body style, 4-door, Pontiac Grand Prix. Police said witnesses told them that they had seen a black man driving a black Grand Prix earlier in the day.

The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated by the fire department.

Police are asking if anyone has information about a missing dark-colored, newer body style, 4-door, Pontiac Grand Prix or the identity of the man to call the Jackson Police Department's Major Crimes Bureau at 731-425-8400.
