Police arrest naked man armed with samurai-like sword and assault rifle

It's highly unlikely any of the members of the San Jose police department pictured 2013 starting like this. On Jan. 1, members of the Crisis Intervention Team responded to a 90-minute standoff involving a nude man armed with a samurai-like sword and an assault rifle.

Coco Bennett, a 29-year old with a history of mental health problems, was arrested by police following the standoff. Bennett was taken to a local hospital for injuries sustained jumping over a fence prior to the standoff.

San Jose police responded to the call of a naked man with an assault rifle by a homeowner. Police found the suspect thanks to a partial license plate number.

Bennett drove police to a parking lot where he removed his clothing. He jumped out of the vehicle waving the sword around wildly. Police later said the situation may have ended differently had Bennett exited with the assault rifle.

The Crisis Intervention Team is a division of the San Jose PD trained to handle situations involving the mentally ill.
