For St. Louis-area race fans, Pole Position Raceway is providing another outlet to feed the addiction. The venue, the ninth national facility to be run by P2R Karting, Inc., is scheduled to open sometime this spring at 8800 Watson Rd. and is currently accepting applications for prospective employees.
The facility is independently owned and operated by Mike Johnson, a St. Louis native and team owner in the Grand-Am Racing Series owned by NASCAR. He is currently the team manager of Stevenson Motorsports which campaigns the Chevrolet Camaro in Grand-Am.
"I have been racing in one form or another for over 20 years, and it feels great to bring all those experiences to my hometown,” said Johnson in a recent press release. “There is such great racing history here in Saint Louis with IndyCar, NASCAR, drag racing and even Formula 1 boats, and we expect Pole Position Raceway St. Louis to be another great form of racing entertainment."
St. Louis has seen karting facilities come and go over the years, but with Pole Position Raceway falling under the umbrella of a national franchise and Johnson's experience in the sport may give the latest venue a legitimate shot. Plus, St. Louis is well known for its distrust of outsiders. Johnson's roots in the Gateway City and his racing resume automatically give him credibility to both race fans here and those on the fringe of the sport who may just be looking for family entertainment.
In addition to side-by-side race action on a giant ¼ mile track, each location also features authentic racing memorabilia, video games, concessions, V.I.P. room, and more. Plus, some of the biggest name in racing are involved with the franchise, including AMA Supercross Champs Jeremy McGrath and Chad Reed, 2004 NASCAR Champ Kurt Busch, X-Games Gold Medalist Mike Metzger, and NASCAR pit reporter Jamie Little, among others.
