This school year, physical education class is going high tech. Polar USA, a leader in heart rate monitoring and fitness assessment technologies, recently released the Polar GoFit iPad app for physical education teachers. The innovative app works with the Polar H7 Bluetooth® heart rate sensor, worn by students, allowing PE teachers to track and monitor each student’s effort through their heart rate.
Does it seem odd to go to such lengths to monitor a student's effort in class? It may seem that way at first, but think of how stringent performance measurements are in other classes. Isn't physical education just as important?
It can be challenging to gauge student involvement in gym class with dozens of students running around. Having a way to measure student participation allows teachers to provide one-on-one guidance. And surprisingly, this isn't Polar's first foray into K-12 schools. Since the early 1990s, Polar has been equipping PE programs with tools and technology to quantify and evaluate students’ fitness. Polar education technology is already used in more than 10,000 K-12 PE programs across the United States.
“Polar products and technologies are utilized by students and teachers in classrooms and playing fields across the globe,” said Herb Baer, Polar USA president. “With the new Polar GoFit app, PE teachers can easily see how students are doing during class, track their progress throughout the school year and use the data as a motivator.”
Polar GoFit helps PE teachers review up to 40 students’ heart rates at a time, individualize instruction to allow students to work at a safe heart rate, analyze and evaluate the lesson afterward, and teach students the health benefits of exercising at different intensities. Perhaps most importantly, it's a great tool to motivate students to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, as they also have access to their own data from any online computer.
Interested in the program for your school? Annual licenses to the polargofit.com web service are available for schools. This allows teachers to store classroom training information and grade their students based on their individual efforts. The Polar GoFit app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store for free. In order to track and save heart rate data, each student needs to wear a Polar H7 Bluetooth heart rate sensor. The sensor can also be used with many other Polar products, both inside of school and out. The H7 Bluetooth heart rate sensors can be purchased in a special 10-unit bundle from Polar.
