Polar Bears International, Denver Zoo release green house grocery list

The message of Arctic Sea Ice Day – July 12 – may be summarized in four words: “It’s not too late.” Polar Bears International released the message, and the Denver Zoo was among the institutions heeding the call. It released a Green House Grocery List.

PBI and the Denver Zoo were among the organizations encouraging people to take the Save Our Sea Ice pledge. Denver’s zoo is the home to polar bears Cranbeary and Lee.

Nonprofit Polar Bears International supports polar bears and addresses the issues that endanger them. The organization listed the challenges: Climate change, the environmental impact of industry, sea ice loss, global warming, and sustainability options. “Our interest is in anything that can, will or is happening to polar bears,” the organization said on its website.

The Denver Zoo is one of 34 institutions in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands. They act as Arctic Ambassador Centers – spreading information about the plight of the polar bears and suggested actions might help.

PBI and its ambassador centers suggest that people “green” their grocery lists through six actions:

  • Consider becoming a “locavore,” by buying locally grown items.
  • Buy organic food and reduce emissions caused by fertilizers.
  • Opt to buy minimally processed food, and join the slow food movement.
  • Purchase minimally packaged foods, and go beyond marketing.
  • Buy locally grown, sustainably raised meats and poultry.
  • Plan ahead, and buy only what you’ll eat. It will save money and the environment.

As a good first step, PBI says, grow what you can. Depending on the location, residents may grow fruits, herbs and vegetables. Your County Extension Office can provide tips.

In Denver, your backyard may include chickens or beehives.

If a porch or deck is your option, consider a container garden.

Other good options include buying from your area farmers’ market or joining your local Community Supported Agriculture program. When you visit your local supermarket, pay attention to the carbon footprint of the food and buy as locally as possible.
