Horse lovers were deeply saddened to learn that Points Offthebench has been severely injured and was taken from this world. Daily Racing Form reported on Oct. 26, 2013, "Breeders' Cup Sprint: Points Offthebench euthanized following workout breakdown." There was deep despair among spectators on Saturday morning at Santa Anita when the star sprinter Points Offthebench suffered from a catastrophic injury during what was supposed to be his final workout toward the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
Mike Smith was riding Points Offthebench when the 4-year-old gelding suddenly broke down on his right foreleg, generating a very loud, frightening sound and throwing Smith to the ground. The jockey got up within seconds and immediately tried to help comfort Points Offthebench, who was in so much pain he was euthanized about 15 minutes later. Tim Yakteen, the gelding’s trainer, said, "Anytime you lose one, it's tough. It's very sad."
