The San Francisco East Bay offers many regular venues for poets to share feelings and insights brought on by their experiences. Listed below are the Editor’s Choice for monthly poetry features and open mics, plus current and upcoming poetry workshops in the San Francisco East Bay area.
BAY AREA POETS COALITION
BAPC publishes POETALK magazine, conducts an ANNUAL POETRY CONTEST (open for entries 9/1 - 11/15/11) and (along with sponsoring special events in the San Francisco Bay Area) hosts an OPEN POETRY READING the first Saturday every month in Berkeley, California at STRAWBERRY CREEK LODGE, 1320 Addison St., Berkeley, CA

Nefeli Caffehosts The Last Word Reading Series, 2nd Fridays, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., open mic follows features.
Address: Nefeli Caffe, Berkeley, 1854 Euclid Ave., at Hearst. Northside UCB campus, next to LaVal's Pizza.
Nefeli serves dinner, tapas, coffee, wine & beer. A one drink minimum is encouraged for poetry attendees.
The alternating hosts are Dale Jensen, Ralph Dranow, John Rowe, and Grace Grafton.

Bay Area Poetry Salons are held in private homes, by reservation on a first-come/first-serve. A small donation of $5-10 is requested but no one is turned away for lack of funds.
Saturday, January 14: 2-4:30 p.m. "Les Symbolists: Poets of the French Symbolist Movement" held in Livermore.
Sunday, January 15: 11:30-2 p.m.: "Les Symbolists," held in Walnut Creek.
Sunday, January 15: 3-5:30 p.m.: "Edgar Allan Poe and His Influence," held in North Oakland.
Monday, January 16: 1-3 p.m.: "The Last 10 Poet Laureates of the United States," held in Rossmoor, Lafayette/Walnut Creek.
Salons in coming months include: "Women Poets Born in the 1920s and 1930s," "Soldiers and Protestors: Poets from Vietnam to Iraq," "A Brief Survey of Poetry in Central and Latin America," "Robert Browning and the American Persona Poem."
January Jubilee, a free online poem-a-day class launches tomorrow, with the first prompt already posted. Come join us if you wish. Go to www.nicenet.comand cut and paste the class code below when you are asked to do so. You will need to provide a "user name," which may be a nom de plume. Each night before midnight, I send out a prompt. You write a poem and post it the next day on the site. People give you feedback and you can read what others have written.
