Poema XV

by Pablo Neruda

Poem 15

It pleases me when you grow silent, as though you were absent,
and you hear me from afar, and my voice does not touch you.
It seems that your eyes have flown from you
and it seems that a kiss has closed your mouth.

As everything is filled with my soul,
you emerge from everything, filled with that soul.
Dream butterfly, you resemble my soul
and you resemble the word melancholy.

It pleases me when you grow silent and are as if far away.
As if moaning, butterfly lulled to sleep.
And you hear me from afar, and my voice does not arrive:
let me quiet myself with your silence.

Let me speak with you also with your silence,
clear as the lamplight, simple as a ring.
You are like the night, quieted and clustered with stars.
Your silence is of the star, so faraway and simple.

It pleases me when you grow silent, as though you were absent.
Distant and dolorous as though you were dead.
One word then, one smile is enough.
And I am happy, happy that that is not so.

Poem XV "Me Gusta Cuando Callas..."

I like you when you are silent because you seem like you are not there,
and you hear me from afar, and my voice does not touch you.
It seems like your eyes have flown away
and it seems that a kiss shuts your mouth.

Like all things are filled from my soul,
you come out from all things, filled from this soul of mine.
Dream butterfly, you resemble my soul
and you resemble the word melancolia.

I like you when you are silent and you seem like distant
as if you were moaning, you cooing butterfly.
And you hear me from afar, and my voice does not reach you:
let me be quiet with that silence of yours.

Let me speak to you with your silence too
light as lamp, simple as a ring.
You are like the night, quieted and clustered in stars.
Your silence is that of a star, so far and simple.

I like you when you are silent because you seem like you are not there.
Distant and dolorous as if you were dead.
One word then, one smile would be enough.
And I am happy, happy that that is not so.
