Atlantic Beach has several notable hamburger joints in its compact Town Square area. One such place is Poe’s Tavern, which celebrates its one year anniversary on Thursday, July 30.
Poe’s is located in the old Sticky Fingers building on Atlantic Blvd. just a couple of block from the ocean. It features a comfortable indoor dining area decked out in Victorian-style chandeliers and lamps, dark wood flooring, and a red brick wall with a portrait of the restaurant’s namesake painted onto it. The eatery also includes a cozy outdoor seating area both covered and uncovered. For a real surprise, wander into the restrooms and listen to a creepy voice read Edgar Allen Poe’s, “The Raven.”
Styled after the gastropub movement of establishment’s, Poe’s prides itself on its gourmet burgers made from beef ground in-house. Each burger is cooked to the customer’s exact liking – including a true, bloody rare that is befitting a place named for the shock master. Burgers can be ordered with a variety of toppings and have names pulled straight from the life and pages of Poe. For example, the Tell-Tale Heart burger features a fried egg, applewood bacon, and cheddar cheese. Another favorite is the House of Usher burger which is served bunless with a choice of pimiento, garlic blue, goat, or jalapeño jack cheese, and topped with blue cheese cole slaw. Other popular entrees include fish tacos, quesadillas, entrée salads, and daily Market Fish sandwich specials. Poe’s is also known for having over 50 craft and high-gravity brews with an emphasis on local and regional selections.
For its anniversary celebration Poe’s will be offering their signature cheeseburger and hand-cut fries for just $5. In addition, you can enjoy a cold Engine 15 Weissguy Hefeweissen for only $3. And, if you want to try your hand at designing your perfect burger, the restaurant is holding a Burger of the Day contest that allows Facebook followers to submits a burger idea that will be featured during the three-day holiday weekend.
