The world of fantasy gaming has been a subculture for over 40 years. From Dungeons & Dragons to World of Warcraft, fantasy books like Lord and the Rings and Harry Potter to Wizard Rock, the influence is as mainstream as ever.
Boston writer Ethan Gilsdorf dives into this world in his new book Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks. A gamer from a young age, Gilsdorf shunned the lifestyle when he entered college but dove back into it after 20 years.
He embarked on a personal quest to discover the roots of the fantasy subculture and why so many people gravitate towards it. From live action role playing games to World of Warcraft, gaming conventions to New Zealand, Gilsdorf left no stone unturned in his journey to uncover the truth.
The book is informative and gripping. As much a journey in gaming as a personal quest for meaning in ones life, Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks is a fantastic read for gamers and non-gamers alike. I did a full review of the book earlier.
In a phone interview on Monday I had the opportunity to talk with Gilsdorf about all aspects of the book and the fantasy culture. Below is the full version of the Ryan McAskill Podcast with guest Ethan Glisdorf.
