We all know the up to 40% of American’s are overweight, with 20% being obese. Now, it appears that Barbie is also overweight, maybe even obese. On Dec. 30, 2013, according to Celebrity Laundry, Mattel released a potential prototype Barbie, calling her ‘plus sized Barbie’.
One person commented and was outraged by the Barbie because she felt it promoted a morbidly obese lifestyle.
No one is naturally fat for God’s sake, that's sending the message to girls, that it's OK to look like this and be unhealthy. How about we stop obsessing about being overweight and teach our children to eat healthy and get out and play.
There is a fine line between fat shaming and promoting obesity. The Barbie is shown with a double chin and is noticeably very overweight. According to Celebrity Laundry, Maria Kang’s show down with a plus sized modeling Facebook page, sparked the idea for this doll.
Apparently, she asked if since obesity is becoming the normal body type, little girls should also have obese dolls to play with. There was an open market for a plus sized doll, and Mattel acted on it. It seems so many people with agree with making the plus sized doll or very much oppose it. What about developing a Barbie that doesn't look like she’s suffering from an eating disorder with a normal body weight?
What do you think is plus sized Barbie a good idea? Would you buy one for your children?
