Plus-size Barbie: 'Bigger' Barbie a good idea for Mattel?

See also

A plus-size Barbie has been the topic of conversation for a couple of days now with thousands of people weighing in on whether or not Mattel should make a "bigger" Barbie doll. On Dec. 28, The Motley Fool reported that debate was sparked after the Facebook group, "Plus Size Modeling" posted the photo on the left and asked their fans their opinions on the matter.

The main debate surrounds the actual photo of the potential Barbie -- or at least how "Plus Size Modeling" sees her. She has a double chin, a thick mid-section, and looks more obese than plus-sized.

A plus-size Barbie is somewhat hard to imagine given the fact that everyone knows (and most have come to love) a "traditional" Barbie who is stick thin with big boobs and gorgeous long hair. In recent years, Barbie has become more of an issue than in years past. Some people believe that Barbie is the furthest thing from the "average" person but some don't really care -- she has been around for over 50 years and she is, after all, just a toy.

With Barbie sales down thanks to the up rise of other more popular dolls (Bratz, American Girl), it seems like Mattel has a bigger issue on their hands -- but will make Barbie more plump solve that problem? Probably not.

Would a plus-size Barbie be something you'd like to see? Do you think there is a fine line between plus size and obese?
