Plumber accused in Uniondale church theft

A Bay Shore man was arrested late Thursday on felony larceny charges after investigators said he stole a brass tabernacle from a Uniondale church where he was working as a plumber, Nassau County police said.

Peter J. Vignona, 53, is awaiting arraignment Jan. 17 at First District Court in Hempstead after being charged with third-degree and fourth-degree grand larceny.

The charges, investigators said, stemmed from a Wednesday afternoon incident that occurred while Vignona was working as a plumber and on a job at St. Pius Church on Front Street in Uniondale.

Cops said while Vignona was working for Traditional AC Plumbing, he allegedly swiped a solid brass tabernacle and some scrap metal from the church. The company, officials said, was hired to work on the church’s boiler.

After an investigation, detectives showed up to Vignona’s home on Brook Avenue in Bay Shore Thursday night and arrested him. The tabernacle was not recovered.
