Plum Organics, a line of organic baby food, voluntarily recalled one specific batch of its 4.22 oz. Apple & Carrot Portable Pouch baby food that was sold at Babies R Us and Toys R Us stores.

Individual pouches with a "best by date" of May 21, 2010 and marked universal product code (UPC) #890180001221 were identified by the company in a news release for recall due to a "risk of potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism."

A routine test found that a mixing error left this particular batch with an improper formulation, leaving the food at risk for contamination.

"The product did not meet the FDA guidelines for proper acidity level," said Dr. Paul Gerhardt, a Food Science Ph.D. and member of the Plum Organics action team.

"Though the risk of illness from this one batch is minimal, Plum Organics is taking the extraordinary step of recalling all Apple & Carrot Baby Food Pouches with best by date May 21, 2010."

No illnesses have been reported.

As an added precaution, Plum Organics also retested all other product lines made before and after this apple and carrot batch and found no further problems.

Consumers can return the food to the Babies R Us or Toys R Us store where it was purchased for a full refund.
