Pletcher forced to pull two contenders from Belmont Stakes

Intense Holiday has been placed on involuntary vacation after suffering a fracture of his right foreleg during a workout at Belmont Park yesterday. Although trainer Todd Pletcher stated that the injury is not expected to be a career-ender, it is enough to pull him from the Belmont Stakes. Any other plans for the future will depend on how well he comes through surgery today at a veterinary clinic in Cream Ridge, NJ. Intense Holiday ran 12th behind California Chrome in the Kentucky Derby and skipped the Preakness.

This is the second time in less than a week that Pletcher has withdrawn a horse from this year’s Belmont Stakes. On Tuesday, he announced that Danza, who came in 3rd in the Derby (and likewise passed on the Preakness) would not run due to a minor skin ailment, as well as apparent fatigue. The double whammy comes just one month after another Pletcher horse, Florida Derby winner Constitution suffered a hairline fracture in his right foreleg during a workout.

Lest anyone should think that Pletcher, who has won two Belmont Stakes, including last year’s race with Palace Malice, might be left without a contender for the 146th running on June 7th, it should be noted that he still has a promising 3-year old in the wings by the name of Tiz Dark.

The Belmont Stakes will be broadcast from Belmont park in Elmont, NY live on Channel 4/ Post time is scheduled for 6:52 pm.
