Plenty of living history and fun for kids in Montgomery, Alabama

More and more gay people are opting for parenthood, and if you are among them, with kids in tow, there's plenty of kid-friendly stuff to do in Montgomery, Alambama.

Alabama’s Cattleman’s Association Museum
Here you’ll find a children’s educational center with a unique agricultural theme, including some fascinating displays and exhibits on nutrition (never too early to get them to learn about a healthy diet, is it?)

Montgomery Area Visitor Center – Downtown
Situated in a historic station, centerpiece of the riverfront, you’ll find the Montgomery Area Visitor Center here. It’s housed in a 3-story building that has a wonderful train shed. And what child doesn’t love trains? The original building was finished in 1898 and the exhibit shows visitors what train travel was like in the 19th century. Here you’ll find an informational video and a gift shop along with knowledgeable staff.

Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts
It’s true not all kids are interested in the fine arts but here at the Museum of Fine Arts you’ll find Alabama’s first interactive fine arts gallery especially appealing to children. It’s called Artworks and might just be enough to change their mind about art. Once the kids have had their fill of what’s on view, you can entice them to look at the 19th and 20th century American paintings and sculpture, Southern regional art and Old Master prints that YOU are sure to love.

Montgomery Performing Arts Center
Kids shows are often performed at the Performing Arts Center, so be sure to check what’s available. Of course there are also broadways shows at this 1800 seat, state-of-the-art entertainment facility, so there’s something for everyone.

Montgomery Zoo
You could easily spent a day at the zoo here and keep the youngsters happy. Amazingly, they have over 500 animals from five different continents but thankfully, all are well-looked after in a spacious 40-acre area. The big animals are always a hit - don’t miss them!

Riverwalk Ampitheatre
Set on the grassy banks of the Alabama River, the Riverwalk Ampitheater is a place to enjoy a picnic while the kids go wild in the splash pad set amidst a fountain of water. Soothing music plays along to everyone’s delight. This is a great way for them to cool off on hot days.

Rosa Parks Library & Museum and Children’s Wing/Troy University
See a replica of the bus and video footage of the day when Rosa Park refused to yield her seat to a white passenger, leading to the Bus Boycott and the Civil Rights Movement in America. Kids will love the Children’s Wing, which shows them how events happened –all geared specially to their age group and ability to understand.

W.A. Gayle Planetarium/Troy University
Kids love to star-gaze and a great place for them to do that is at the planetarium located in Oak Park. The planetarium boasts a 50-foot doomed ceiling, perfect for the vision of both young and old.

So now you have some great ideas of where to take the kids to keep them entertained. But there’s no law that says the adults in your group can’t enjoy the attractions too. After all, you’re never too old as an adult to entertain your inner child…
