ABOUT THE PLEDGE
Whether you’re going to work or just want a simple way to exercise and embrace the outdoors, walking is a great way to stay active and environmentally aware. Support organizations like Everybody Walk and take the pledge to walk for your health and the environment.
Walking is just plain good for you. Americans walk the least out of any industrialized nation in the world. Regular walking can help reduce anxiety, depression and stress. Walking can also help reduce your risk of diabetes, cancer, obesity and heart disease. It increases your overall energy and flexibility, raises your metabolism and improves the efficiency of your heart and lungs.
Making a conscious effort to walk instead of drive or take public transportation can dramatically change your life for the better. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, pick up your kids from school by foot and pledge to walk at least 30 minutes a day. Avoiding just ten miles of driving every week could eliminate up to 500 pounds of harmful carbon dioxide emissions each year.
