Please check out the big three at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is the home of one of the best collection of dinosaurs in the world. In their exhibit DINOSAURS IN THEIR TIME. They have three of the most complete dinosaur skeleton fossils of sauropods in the world. The big three are Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, and Camarasaurus.

Diplodocus : One of the best known sauropod dinosaurs. It was one of the longest animals ever to walk the earth. Casts of this dinosaur are in other museums around the world. J. Wortman and his field crew discovered the fossil skeleton in 1899 at Sheep Creek, Wyoming. The length of this dinosaur was up to 90 feet.

Apatosaurus : At one time was called Brontosaurus. Before they discovered that it had the wrong fossil skull. Earl Douglass and his field crew found a skull of Apatosaurus that was similar to that of Diplodocus. They then found the fossil skeleton right near the skull. The Brontosaurus which was a popular childhood dinosaur and the symbol for Sinclair petroleum company in the 1960's has disappeared from museums in the last twenty years. The paleontologist Marsh was the one who caused the confusion about this dinosaur. He is the one who put the wrong head on the Apatosaurus. Earl Douglass discovered the skull and skeleton of Apatosaurus in 1909 at what is now known as Dinosaur National Monument in Utah. The length of this dinosaur was up to 77 feet.

Camarasaurus : Was quite different to Apatosaurus and Diplodocus. it had a thicker skull and a lot larger spoon-shaped teeth that was made to feed on plant material that was much more coarse. Diplodocus and Apatosaurus had small peg-like teeth used for soft delicate plants. On display at the museum is a complete fossil skeleton still partly encased in sandstone in which it was found nearly a century ago by Earl Douglass and his field crew. The length of this dinosaur was up to 59 feet.

Please come and check out these three magnificent sauropods. You won't be sorry you did.
